In all traditions there has always been a ceremony marking the passage of a child into adult life.
In Italy it has often had a religious connotation, but abroad this type of celebration is used in families of secular-humanist inspiration.
Very common in Northern Europe, these ceremonies are preceded by meetings where ethics, philosophy and civil rights are debated and teenagers discuss their ideas and the values they want to be the basis of their adult lives.
In Italy they are almost unknown, but they could be an important opportunity for the family to emphasise the increased independence of their children: independence granted, but above all conquered.
It can be a moment to be experienced in a group or within one’s own family.
As a celebrant, it will be important to know well what are the values that supported the education of the children, what are the reasons that prompted parents to think of a ceremony like this. Personalised dedications or readings can be used; a personalised ritual can be created. Together, we can build a meaningful moment that is a stimulus for the children’s growth.
I believe that children in the world should be free to grow up and become adults, in health, peace and dignity. (Nelson Mandela)
